Environmental Building

Sustained growth over the last decade has meant Castell Howell needed to invest in a new distribution centre at Cross Hands.

This development created a great opportunity to review at all operations from an environmental point of view.

By appointing Breeam Assessors from the planning stage onward we committed ourselves to ensuring the project attempted to reduce the environmental impact of the development in as many ways as possible .

Perhaps the most novel example of this committment was the drilling of a 450 foot bore hole to supply clean water to the site. Carrying food requires our fleet of lorries to be spotless and the volume of water used to achieve this is considerable. As rainwater can be contaminated and traditional supplies can be environmentally wasteful, due to the need for a huge infrastructure, we recognised this drilling was a sustainable solution to this problem.

As a byproduct the water supply was also able to cover other area such as the need for water throughout the waste systems in the main building.

Movement sensors to ensure the lighting system in many "light use" areas are only activated when people need it, a decision to purchase electricity from Scottish & Southern who gaurantee the source is 100% renewable, and the use of low energy bulbs all reflect more mundane but equally important focus on the environment.
