Retread Research

Ongoing work by the Centre of Remanufacturing and Re-use (CRR) is highly supportive of the long-held view that retreading tyres yields significant cost and environmental benefits.

However the CRR recognises there is still a need to actively address user perceptions about the relative quality of retread tyres compared to new. The need for research in this area is supported by Government organisations such as Defra through their waste and resource action programme (WRAP), the Retread Manufacturers’ Association (RMA) and, not least, individuals in the retread supply chain including fleet managers.

In order to create an objective and meaningful test and subsequent report, Castell Howell, alongside a cross section of managers of LCV fleets operating on retreaded tyres are getting involved in a trial project.

This project involves the testing of vehicles fitted with retreaded and new tyres with the wear of the tyres being measured over the course of 6 months.
