This campaign is simply like no other… it’s a fun and inclusive drive to help pupils and their families embrace the power of healthy eating, through discovery, activities and collaboration.
Working in partnership with RCT School Catering to promote vegetables on the school menu and with the support of teachers and the school kitchen team at Parc Lewis, the pupils thoroughly enjoyed engaging sessions over a three day period where they:
- Learnt about the amazing Welsh Farmers who grow our food
- Discovered how our three Superhero Vegetables fuel our bodies.
- Took part in hands on fun activities which included creating ‘Superhero Veg’ masks, puzzles, trading cards and colouring in.
- Enjoyed their special lunch which included the three Superhero Vegetables. The kitchen team brought the canteen to life with excitement around the super vegetables!
Laura Chandler, Parc Lewis Deput Head said ‘Pupils have really thrown themselves into the activities, many have tried certain vegetables for the very first time and have been going up for second helpings. We’re thrilled to see the children enjoying their school dinners, eating lots of veg and seeing the positive impact that the campaign is having’’
Steffan Evans, ESG Engagement Officer said ‘’It’s great to see that already this campaign is making a difference, with an uptake in school dinners and more vegetables on plates – it’s a great success for us, Welsh Growers and Welsh farmers’’
Steffan added ‘‘We’re looking forward to rolling this initiative out further to schools across Wales and can’t thank the teachers, catering staff and pupils of Parc Lewis enough for the enthusiasm and support they’ve shown this campaign.
The ‘Growing Healthy Futures’ initiative aims to:
- Help Welsh farmers and growers by increasing the volume of organic Welsh vegetables supplied to schools and colleges by restructuring supply chains and promoting environmental and social benefits.
- Promote healthy choices on menus by engaging pupils in fun activities to educate, build familiarity, and create anticipation before new menu items are served.
- Work with school catering teams to align with pupils' engagement activities to increase meal uptake and reduce plate waste.
